However, there can be no assurance that the company will continue to pay quarterly dividends in the future. I have never purchased shares of Arch Coal stock. Why am I receiving dividends?
On March 29, 2000, Ashland Inc. - our largest shareholder at the time - distributed 17.4 million shares of Arch Coal stock to its own shareholders. If you owned Ashland stock as of the record date of that transaction [March 24, 2000], you would have received shares in that distribution. The value of a share of ACI on March 24 was $7.1875, which is the value used for purposes of determining the amount of income to you.
