SALT LAKE CITY (April 22, 2009) - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) today announced that its Canyon Fuel Company's Sufco, Skyline and Dugout Canyon mines each earned a Utah Earth Day award for outstanding efforts in environmental stewardship during the 2008 calendar year.

The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining (DOGM) board of directors presented company officials with the awards on April 22. This is the fourth consecutive year that both Sufco and Skyline mines have earned Earth Day awards.

Sufco mine was recognized for its wildlife habitat improvement and sagebrush restoration efforts in the Manti La-Sal National Forest. This two-month voluntary project with the National Forest Service rejuvenated 810 acres with diverse vegetation that will attract and support the area's native sage grouse population and other wildlife.

Skyline mine was honored for reprocessing an existing coal refuse disposal site in order to recover additional volumes of marketable coal. This project prolongs the life of the coal refuse disposal site, deferring the need to expand its footprint.

Dugout Canyon was honored for two water-related projects that will enhance wildlife habitat in Clark Valley and control future erosion in Pine and Dugout Canyons. A water collection and distribution system was constructed to serve livestock and wildlife in a 9,000-acre area in Clark Valley, which included providing irrigation for 14 acres of alfalfa, wheat, sunflowers and native grasses. Employees also constructed a storm water runoff system and stock ponds to capture spring flows as well as modified existing culverts and installed water bars on private roads to reduce erosion and soil loss.

"This is a tremendous achievement for the employees of Sufco, Skyline and Dugout Canyon," said Arch Western Bituminous Group's President Gene DiClaudio. "We're honored to be repeatedly recognized for applying our skills and resources to help enhance the Utah landscape for its people and its wildlife."

Arch Coal's Canyon Fuel Company is Utah's largest coal producer and a large state employer with a workforce of approximately 800. Sufco mine is located near Salina, Utah. Skyline mine is located near Scofield, Utah. Dugout Canyon mine is located near Wellington, Utah. Through its national network of mines, Arch Coal provides the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. The company maintains its corporate headquarters in St. Louis, Mo.
