Arch Coal CEO to Speak at Energy Conference on September 8, Live Webcast Available

ST. LOUIS (September 7, 2004) - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) today announced that its President and Chief Executive Officer, Steven F. Leer, will speak at Lehman Brothers' 2004 CEO Energy/Power Conference in New York City on Wednesday, September 8. Leer will outline the company's strategic direction.

St. Louis-based Arch Coal is the nation's second largest coal producer and mines low-sulfur coal exclusively.
