Arch Coal Names Feldman as Vice President of Human Resources

ST. LOUIS (January 14, 2003) - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) named Sheila B. Feldman as its vice president of human resources, effective Feb. 3. Feldman previously held the position of vice president of human resources and public affairs for Solutia Inc.

"We're pleased Sheila has joined us," said Steven F. Leer, Arch Coal's president and chief executive officer. "Sheila's leadership qualities and 25 years of proven experience in human resources will make her a strong asset to our management team."

Feldman joined Monsanto in 1991, and assumed the role of vice president in 1997 when Monsanto spun off Solutia into a separate chemical company. At Solutia, Feldman led the worldwide human resources organization, including responsibility for compensation, benefits, organizational development/training, staffing and labor relations. She was also accountable for all internal communications and media relations.

Prior to Monsanto, Feldman served in various HR management positions at Taco Bell Corp. (then a subsidiary of Pepsico), Emerson Electric Co. and Cooper Industries.

A native of Bethesda, Md., Feldman earned a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a bachelor's of arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Feldman replaces Brad Allbritten who was named vice president of marketing for Arch Coal in August. Allbritten now has responsibility for the company's coal marketing, trading, transportation and contract administration functions.

Arch Coal is the nation's second largest coal producer with subsidiary operations in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Through these operations, Arch Coal provides the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.
